Logging out from UNIX

Logging out of UNIX may be achieved simply by typing logout, or <ctrl-D> or exit. All three terminate the login shell and , in the former case, the shell performs commands from the .bash_logout file in your home directory. Exit is a C function that kills the calling process and circumvents all cleanup. When logging out of the console, you should log out of each window before exiting from your window manager.
